We all have goals in our life. But how many of you have actually written down your goals? Research has shown that 90% of us do not set goals. And out of the 10% who actually do, only about 3% actually write them down. And out of that 3% group belongs some of the most successful people in all fields and endeavors.

Want to know how you can go about Goal-Setting and Achieving? Here’s some steps you can you use to get started on that path:

1. Create Your Main (BIG) Goal

First, you need to be very clear on what you want and what you want to do. Have a main goal that you want to reach in the near future. Doing this will give something to look forward to something in your everyday life.

Write things down if want to be successful. Your goals should be definite, clear, meaningful, realistic and require a small “stretch” (outside of your everyday habits) for you to achieve it.

2. Break This Main Goal Down Into Short-term Goals

Now that you have a main goal, you have something that you are set on accomplishing. The next step to goal setting is to break down that main goal into smaller tasks and mini-goals. And put these goals on a timeline of when you will accomplish them by. This will help you to easier track your goals. You will be able to monitor your progress and the pace at which you are moving along.

3. Have a Definitive Timeline (Date Based).

By outlining the short-term goals required to reach the main goal, you are actually building a more manageable goal setting timeline. This critical step for goal-setting will give you a sense of control and greater responsibility. And a goal where you can see actual results will surely boost self-confidence.

4. Be Clear On Your Benefits!

Always write down what benefits you expect to obtain upon reaching your goals. Without these benefits, you will be clueless and lack motivation in terms of why you are trying to reach for something.

Confusion on what prize you would get in the end would mar your confidence and diminish your motivation.

5. Put Them Somewhere Visible

Now that you have written down your main goal, your short-term goals, set up a timeline and your benefits. Its now time to put it somewhere you can clearly see it everyday. This could be a bedroom mirror, by your nightstand or printed and placed in a desktop frame. It will serve as a constant reminder of your goal and help you focus on getting obsessed with it and working toward it everyday.

Reflect on a daily affirmation or post visual images of your goals within view or in prominent locations to make your goal setting strategy work at its best. Like in bathroom mirrors, pillow casings, the refrigerator, working area, even your car and your brief case.

6. Consciously and Proactively Act on Each Step & Goal

The next important step to goal setting is taking CONSISTENT action. Each step you take gets you closer to what it is you desire to accomplish. Don’t be too hard on yourself when you are faced with any setbacks. These are all a part of accomplishing your goals. You won’t get too far off-track or fail as long as you have clearly defined your goals and steps.

Try to make a list in advance of potential distractions and how you will overcome them such as lack of resources, minor setbacks, poor management of time and procrastination.

7. Keep Your Track Your Progress

One of the most overlooked steps in goal-setting is being able to track progress. It is a very important tool for staying motivated. After you reach a small goal or milestone remember to reward yourself. This will help keep you going and pushing forward to your ultimate end goal.
