I once applied for a job through a temp company. The position was for working on a production line at a manufacturing company. While it was a casual dress position, I was shocked at how many people waiting in the lobby for the temp company were wearing jeans and their comfy clothes.

This also includes dressing professionally and dressing for success. While it is important that you do so when attending job interviews, did you also know that it is just as important when you are applying for jobs in-person?

When it comes to dressing for success when applying for jobs, there are many individuals who don’t understand why it is so important. As you likely already know, you can apply for jobs in a number of different ways. You can apply for jobs online through a number of popular websites such as Indeed, Monster or Glassdoor. You can also apply in person or physically mail in a resume depending on what the situation and job is. If you intend to submit any of your job applications or resumes in person, it is advised that you take a close look at how you are dressed and your personal hygiene. You should never approach the business establishment of a potential employer in casual clothing even if you are just planning to pick up or drop off a resume.

Another reason why you should dress for success when applying for jobs, especially in person, is because of common best practices. You may not know this and not all businesses use this approach, but the person taking your job application may be making mental notes. Remember this could be your coworker? Did you smile when you walked in the door? Did you speak confidently? Were you professional in your appearance? First impressions truly are everything. This could be especially likely to happen if you have a position where you will be required to interact face to face with customers or other employees.

In addition to creating YOUR BEST first impression, it is important that you always dress professionally when submitting job applications or resumes in person because you never know what surprises may await you. Although most companies might collect your resume and/or job application and tell you they will call back if they are interested, other companies may be in need of employees right away. In this case, it would not be uncommon to be asked to do an interview right on the spot. And depending on your resume, your experience and your availability, you might even be offered a job right away! Since you never know what the situation is, when applying for jobs, it is advised that you dress your best and be ready and confident to do an interview right away if invited.

Regardless of whether you are applying to work at a professional office, construction company, manufacturing firm or fast food restaurant, you should always dress professional when dropping off your resumes and/or job applications. Even if your position will will not be required to wear the same clothes to work, in the event you are hired, it is important to remember that you want to create a good impression of yourself.

The same holds true if you are attending a career or job fair. Career fairs are where multiple employers, set up booths and search for new employees. It is not uncommon for companies to give on the spot job interviews during career fairs. This is just another reason why it is very important that you dress for success.

In terms of dressing for a success, a simple pants suit or business skirt and blouse should be enough for women to make a good first impression. And for men, you can wear business suits or even an outfit that includes dark colored dress slacks, a dress shirt, and a tie.
